For patients with stenosis (narrowing) of their mitral valve we offer a variety of replacement options. These are also offered to patients with leaking (regurgitant) mitral valves that cannot be repaired which is occasionally seen in patients with a history of rheumatic fever.
In some patients, especially those with narrowed mitral valves from rheumatic (scarlet) fever, repair of their valve is associated with a poor long term durability. For these patients replacement of their mitral valve offers an excellent solution.

Key Benefits:

  • Patients will usually experience an improvement in their shortness of breath and exercise ability
  • We use techniques to maintain the support structure of the valve which helps with heart function
