declined to the lowest level in a decade. It includes the mortality rates for isolated CABG surgery for the 17 hospitals that performed open-heart surgery that year. The average mortality rate was 1.98 percent. The report also included patient mortality data for individual cardiac surgeons. Among them, Englewood Hospital’s M. Arisan Ergin, MD, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and James Klein, MD, Director of Cardiac Surgery Services, who had no deaths during the report’s two-year period.
“We’re extremely pleased with this latest cardiac report card,” states Dr. Ergin.“We achieved this outcome with one of the lowest patient length of stays, which is another measure of our adherence to the absolute highest standard of care.”
According to the report, Englewood Hospital’s average length of hospital stay was 5.85 days while the state average was higher at 6.43 days.
Of all New Jersey hospitals, Englewood Hospital performs among the highest proportion of complex cardiac operations. “Our case mix includes a significant number of high-risk and complex procedures,” said Dr. Klein. “Many of these cases are performed on an emergency basis or are cases referred to us by other hospitals around the country that are unable to address the intricate cardiac issues that present.”
Englewood Hospital’s Heart and Vascular Institute focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of all cardiac and vascular diseases with particular emphasis on angioplasty, cardiac surgery, surgery for aneurysms, peripheral vascular blockages and limb salvage.
“We provide patients with less invasive surgical and non-surgical techniques including beating heart surgery,” says Dr. Klein. “Furthermore, approximately 80% of our cardiac surgeries are performed transfusion-free, for which many other well-known institutions seek our expertise.”
